This will be short and sweet since I’m at work and on my lunch break. I just wanted to let my legions of loyal readers know that I’m still alive and well. I don’t know how all you other ‘ bloggers ‘ find so much time to write, I seem to never have enough time in a day to do everything I enjoy. However, that could be in part to my inability to focus one hobby at a time. I just have way too many. A new hobby for me ususally always starts with good intentions and then its not long after that when I find something new and possibly exciting to do that distracts me from whatever it was I was doing before and then the cycle repeats.

More recently, this change in focus has been attributed to a mild burnout and bitter taste to the world of poker. As most of you can attest to, the game can become mentally and physically draining at times. Sometimes its be because you are losing or that you simply need a break from too much play. Either way, there comes a point in any serious players life, you just need to take a break. Well I am at this point….I just need a small break.

So what are you doing instead, you ask? ….Well…… I’m playing World of Warcraft.  Now I know most of you are fermiliar with this game or know someone who plays it, but in a nutshell, it is a computer based role playing game with 100% focus on multiplayer interactivity. You create an in-game character, travel a virtual world, where everyone has a common goal of ‘leveling’ your character to its maximum abilities by completing quests and killing monsters. Most of the objectives/goals you encounter are team based and require a shared effort with other players around you. Hence its alure.

The fun thing about playing this for me is that my girlfriend is also enjoying the game.  So we are able to both logon at the same time and persue our rise to the top of the virtual food chain together. It’s been a lot of fun so far and it has been a great distraction from playing online poker. I can honestly say, if she was not playing, I probably wouldn’t be able to dedicate the time to it.  I hope to continue playing it for a while but will again, no doubt refocus my energy as our seasons shift towards spring/summer. Im really starting to forget what positive temperatures feel like. Gosh its been a long winter.

To finish,  just a brief update about our Puppy Razz. ( 18 weeks old ).

For the past few weeks she’s been having a real difficult time in controlling her pee’ing, It’s almost as if all the training has been going backwards and she just goes whever she pleases. But I noticed that her pee had a really strong smell and was inconsistent in color going from really clear, to really yellow. Then on the weekend I happened to notice she had some blood down there……oh ….oh…….. So on monday I took her in for 2nd booster shots and to find out of if what was going on with her. The shots went ok and when I asked the vet if we should be concerned about her issue, he didnt seem too concerned and said that its not that uncommon for puppies to catch infections and that some antibiotics would probably clear things up. So we will see how that goes, hopefully its not more serious.

I can’t wait to take her to the beach for the first time! Her favorite passtime is playing fetch, so that will be a blast. She’s never even smelled fresh grass yet….very excited for her first summer.

I should be updating my photo gallery soon with some new pictures of her along with a mountain of older pictures I’ve been meaning to post. Maybe I’ll get to that this weekend…..if im not busy leveling my Night Elf Hunter…..I’m such a geek.

Anyways, I should get back to work.

Till next time.

As with many amateurs/pro’s alike, one of their ultimate poker goals is to be able to play in the 10,000$ No Limit Hold’em main event in Las Vegas which is hosted once a year and boasts one of the biggest paydays in poker every year. For even more, is a dream that appears within reach. This is one of my dreams. A few days ago many of the poker sites started hosting their qualifiers. One of these qualifiers is the Pokerstars 6 step program. For as little as $ 7.50 or 500 player points one can take their chances at battling it out in a 6 round sit and go style ladder where the top 2 players advance to the next round. Once at step 6…well, the winner completes the task of earning a seat into the 2008 main event. So today at work in a moment of inspiration I sent a instant message to one of my fellow coworkers/poker buddies and offered him a mild prop bet of 20.00$ that I could win this seat, any means neccessary. He gladly accepted…….

So here I am trying to fufill this challenge. Over the next few weeks/months I will attempt to win a seat. I hope to document most of them.

Attempt # 1

I decided to play the Step 1  $ 7.50 9 player on PokerStars and things were going well. We were at the 4th blind level and I was quite comfortable with slightly more then double my starting stack….then a hand which is almost impossible to get away from in this format happened….

Well, lets keep trying folks….I have no intentions of giving Shane my $ 20.00.

This hand was by no means a big risk as the player had nothing more behind him except his 11$ all in. But it serves the purpose of the point I’m going to make.

One of the first levels of becoming a good poker player is learning how to value your hands, playing tight and being extremely patient. Another ability, which I feel only comes from playing thousands of hands and being very observant, is the ability to understand and pick up on player tendencies. Quite often these things are observed only by making these blunders yourself countless times and learning from it.  Let’s look at the following micro limit hand.

This post was no intention to brag about any hand reading abilities, as I’m often wrong more then I’d like to admit , but I wanted to exemplify the need to go with your instincts in a lot of situations like this. To some, they might say, you called with a top pair and no kicker?…., but you need to consider the many factors of the situation. Ask yourself questions like…What happened preflop? Did anyone show strength or weakness? Based on the texture of the board, would your opponent have similar holdings? If you were in their situations what might you do? ( Sometimes you need think like a beginner and dumb yourself down a bit…..) How has this person been playing? Aggressive? Tight? Loose? Passive? …..You need to have a keen poker sense to take advantages of these marginal situations, this game we play is about extracting as much value as you can out of small windows of opportunity. You need to be observant of your play and avoid being on ‘cruise control ‘. Once you know how to play YOUR cards, you then need to learn how to play the cards of your opponent!

Use all your senses, pay attention…turn off your music, turn off your tv, watch what others are doing, learn from your own mistakes and then take advantage of others when they make them. Online poker does not give you the ability to read peoples physical tells, so you need to use whatever other information you can get. Player tendencies are key to online success……and on the real felt.

Now, let me go work on what im preaching……

You can’t beat me with Queens! Its my new favorite Hand!

I just wanted to post this to re-iterate to myself why set mining is so valuable. Had this player of had 2 pair, Id be sure to stack him. I also do not see the value in raising hands like this when you are way out of position and your table is hyper-aggressive. Let them do your bidding and try and hit your set.

My thoughts on playing pocket pairs preflop online:

9’s to A’s  I will raise out of position at 6 handed play 85-95% of the time , any pair from 8’s to 2’s , I typically call.

If Im playing full ring ( 9 or 10 player ), I’ll wait for J’s or higher to open raise in an early position, varying from a 4x to 6x raise, almost 100% of the time.

Playing live is different, I’ll be more inclined to raise more often with lower pair.

Im such a man….

I don’t see the point in betting out of position here. Especially when im playing less then 18% of my hands, anyways, …point is, when you exude strength and your image is tight, sometimes you need to represent even when you don’t hit

Yet again, another guy that just finished stacking off his chips 3 times. I knew my hand was good the whole way……….. Guess I recovered some of my loss to the straight flush earlier……….I feel justified a bit.

Oh well, if I can laugh a hand like this off, I’ve won half the battle ;) Enjoy my demise on this one folks.
